“I need a new website”. A random thought that entered my head somewhere between leaving a Moray Business Week event last November and arriving home.
I blame Mhairi McLean. Mhairi is a creative writer who writes copy for busy people and businesses. She too was at the event where Jackie Waring as part of her Get Set for Growth taster session which helped a small group of ladies including myself start to believe they were ready for the next step in their business. I was fascinated by Mhairi’s work and it seems she knew of mine too from recent distillery events she had been involved in. We hit it off immediately. A marriage made in heaven though we didn’t know it just at that moment.
I have always designed and built my own websites – and even done work for others. I also love writing – perhaps you can tell ;). So a new website wasn’t even in my business plan for 2015 and the future for Highland Occasions. But over nine years of always using the same approach to your site can leave you complacent. Even after a design tweak and a serious update from time to time the truth is it’s often still the same content just displayed and worded a little differently. A fresh pair of eyes is often what you need to help see things, and yourself, in a different way. There I was driving home and suddenly the light bulb came on. A new website. Could I? Really? Hand over the whole job to a third party.
I knew I could trust Mhairi implicitly to help me create content which better reflected the business, where it has come from, how far it has travelled through the styles and years to where it is now. My next step was to find a web designer. Now handing over the reigns to someone when you have spent nine years or more on your own websites is rather like being a chef and asking another one to cook dinner for you. So I needed one who wouldn’t turn me off and send me straight back to my laptop and my HTML after the first meeting. One who wouldn’t start out rubbishing my bad coding habits – but would simply give me a new look. Neil Hedley of Hedley Enterprises was recommended and the decision was made. Eek!
The Drouthy Cobbler was the setting for our first meeting. Good coffee, a lot of laughs and some really creative thinking in a relaxed setting. What’s not to like? I came away buzzing. I was so excited and I didn’t even know what it was going to look like yet. The first “taster” was on my screen within the week and I loved it so much I left there all day. They are so clever. Then it was simply an iterative process of Neil creating pages, Mhairi writing copy, me reviewing, tweaking, inputting and writing a bit of my own here and there and within four weeks our final sign off meeting was complete. A few Skype sessions along the way and a few tweets, more laughs and we had it cracked. My fabulous web team!
I still have full control of my site and its content so I can add, take away, amend as I wish – but safe in the knowledge Neil will always be on hand with a little technical help if I need it. It really is easy peasy to update though. If you need a website and a team who work well together then give them a try. And you can quote me delighted.
